Responding to God’s Call

To become a good follower of God means to share the good news and help those who are in need. However, the question is: can a person really be pure enough to do it?

During the Mass in celebration of the 19th World Day of Consecrated Life at San Pedro Cathedral Parish, last February 2, Archbishop Romulo G. Valles pointed out in his homily the challenge for our purification. Religious men and women from different congregations, diocesan priests, seminarians and laity are called to be purified from our sins.

Saint John Paul II, then Pope, instituted this annual celebration in 1997.

Having been given the privilege to shake hands with Pope Francis during his visit, Archbishop Valles, asked himself how rightful he is and whether he is worthy in front of the Pope.

In this Year of Consecrated Life, Archbishop Valles’ reflection revolved around three major elements: Purification, Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and Lighting of Candles which symbolizes Jesus the Light as presented to His people Israel represented by Simeon and Anna.

“The challenge is how to live my vows in responding and helping the poor. It is our call; it is our mission to help people,” Sister Mary Julianne Villarin of Benedictine Sisters of the Eucharistic King, said when asked how she responds to the call of God.

“It is a reminder and inspiration as a religious with our vows, a call to conversion and purification,” she added. (Jackelyn Bayaton)
