Pastoral Care for Migrants
The Archdiocesan Commission on Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Dexter Veloso, is gearing up for the annual Migrant’s Sunday celebration on September 29, 2024. This significant day in the Catholic Church honors the countless Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), seafarers, and their families, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions to both the local and global community.
Since taking the helm as director in April 2023, Fr. Veloso has been actively working to engage and support the migrant and seafaring communities within the Archdiocese of Davao. Through a series of initiatives, orientations, and collaboration with government agencies such as the Department of Migrant Workers and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Archdiocesan Commission on Migrants has consistently sought to extend spiritual, moral, and practical support to these communities.
In preparation for this year’s Migrant’s Sunday, the Commission has already laid the groundwork through extensive activities over the past year, including profiling OFWs, creating parish-level teams, and organizing numerous orientation seminars. These efforts have ensured that every parish, vicariate, and associated organization is equipped to provide comprehensive support to the families of migrants and seafarers.
One of the highlights of the year was the June 25 celebration of International Seafarers’ Day in Davao City, where local seafarers were honored for their vital role in global trade. The theme for this year, “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” focused on the physical and emotional challenges faced by seafarers, as well as the need for heightened safety measures. Fr. Veloso, in his homily during the event, emphasized the strength and resilience of seafarers, comparing their life at sea to the waves of life and God as the anchor that provides stability.
Throughout 2024, the Archdiocese has also prioritized collaboration with educational institutions. Notable partnerships have been established with schools such as San Pedro College Inc., Holy Cross of Agdao, and Holy Cross College of Sasa.
As the Church prepares for Migrant’s Sunday, the Archdiocesan Commission on Migrants and Itinerant Peoples remains committed to providing continuous guidance and support to all OFWs, seafarers, and their loved ones. The Commission’s work is an evidence to the Church’s firm dedication to these communities, recognizing their sacrifices and the essential role they play in society.
Migrant’s Sunday is a reminder to all of us of the enduring contributions of our migrant brothers and sisters, and it is an opportunity to offer our prayers, gratitude, and support for their safety and well-being, trusting that the Church will continue to serve as their anchor amidst life’s waves.
