Newly ordained Priest from the Diocese of Tagum answers the call of Jesus

On June 27, 2024, most Rev. Medil S. Aseo, D.D., Bishop of Tagum, delivered a moving message to the newly ordained priest Rev. Mark Jay Fiel Paña, at San Ignacio de Loyola Parish, Monkayo, Davao de Oro. The ordination ceremony was attended by the clergy, parishioners, and Fr. Paña’s family, who joined in celebrating this significant milestone in his life and ministry.

Fr. Paña is the second out of eight deacons ordained in the Diocese of Tagum. His mother, Mrs. Gemma Paña, proudly shares his dedication to priesthood, offering prayer and gratitude as he fulfills his vocation to serve God as a priest.

Bishop Aseo’s Homily began by acknowledging the profound joy and communal spirit among those present, emphasizing the significance of priesthood within the community. He expressed gratitude to the Lord for the opportunity to celebrate this occasion, marked by God’s enduring love for all.

Addressing the congregation, Bishop Aseo highlighted the role of priests as caretakers of humanity, entrusted with spreading the good news and providing spiritual and pastoral care. He emphasized the expansive responsibilities of priesthood, which encompass preaching, healing the sick, and serving the needs of the community.

In a poignant moment, Bishop Aseo directed his words to Fr. Paña, reminding him that priesthood is not for personal glory but a sacred duty to the Church and all people. He invoked the teachings of St. Paul to the Philippians, emphasizing the courage and strength bestowed by Christ to face the challenges ahead.

Reflecting on the Gospel of St. John, Bishop Aseo reiterated Jesus’ call to care for His sheep, symbolizing that love and compassion are central to Christ’s ministry. He drew parallels between the disciples’ role as shepherds and Fr. Paña’s future mission in guiding and nurturing the faithful.

Concluding his homily, Bishop Aseo called for unity and support from the community as Fr. Paña embarks on his ministry. He offered prayers for Fr. Paña’s steadfastness, wisdom, and commitment to embodying Christ’s heart in every aspect of his life as a priest.

The ordination ceremony concluded with a resounding affirmation of faith and unity, as the clergy and parishioners alike offer their support and prayers for Fr. Paña’s journey in priesthood. Fr. Paña’s ordination signifies his dedication to serving God, the Church, and His people with unwavering faith and compassion, embracing his role in spreading God’s love and mercy to all.
