The Beacon of Hope: The Story Behind Nuestra Señora De Guia Parish of Dawan, Mati City

In the southern part of Mati City, there stands Nuestra Señora De Guia with all its glory. Built from faith and unity, strengthened by its mother parishes – San Isidro Labrador Parish in Bato-Bato and the San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish in Mati City – there she emits uniqueness beyond ordinary.

In the early 90’s, the members of the pastoral council of San Isidro had envisioned of creating a new Parish from the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) within its jurisdiction. Two years before it was officially declared as a Quasi-Parish, it was being prepared as a sub-center of San Isidro. During this time, the seven Barangays alongside their Barangay Captains, were consulted about this objective. A heartfelt prayer was offered by a Barangay Captain, who was also a pastor of the Baptist Church, for the realization of this dream. Proving that there is no boundary when it comes to believing and trusting the Almighty.

Upon the year 1994, the declaration of Nuestra Señora De Guia as a Quasi-Parish was announced. Consisting of 18 BEC’s from San Isidro Labrador Parish and 9 BEC’s from San Nicolas De Tolentino Cathedral Parish. The former parish priest of San Isidro Labrador Parish, Rev. Fr. Medardo A. Salomia, was assigned as administrator of the newly created Quasi-Parish.

In the course of establishing the Parish, the family who donated the site for the Church and rectory expressed their desire to have Nuestra Señora De Guia as the Patron Saint of the Parish. With great joy, the image of the Lady was brought in a procession from the chapel in Barangay Poblacion to the Parish church, which was a makeshift small native Church made of bamboo and nipa, situated on top of a hill. This humble structure served as the temporary church for the faithful for three years.

Soon, the Parish grew and unavoidable challenges arose. There was a time when treasure hunters wanted to dig the hill due to rumors of buried bunkers of Nickel Babbit. However, the parishioners fought together to conserve the sacred place and prevent any digging activities. In the late 90’s, the priest faced threats due to the Parish’s advocacy for environmental protection, particularly against illegal logging and mining. Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Nuestra Señora De Guia, and by the grace of God these problems were overcome.

In 1998, a bigger and more permanent Church was constructed using round timber and cogon roofing. The construction was made possible through the “Bayanihan System”, where the Parishioners, mostly farmers and fishermen, generously contributed their time and resources. This new Church became a system of unity and faith for the community.

In the year 2012, a remarkable milestone was achieved when a permanent concrete church building was constructed. This accomplishment was made possible through the unwavering commitment of the parish priest, the collaboration of the lay leaders and members, and the support of generous individuals from other places.

Finally after 25 years, Nuestra Señora De Guia Parish continues to thrive and fulfill its mission of sharing and living the good news. With the guidance and intercession of their beloved Patron Saint, Nuestra Señora De Guia, the Parishioners served the people of God with love and devotion. In the hearts of the faithful, her presence is felt in every prayer, every act of kindness, and every moment of unity. For in Nuestra Señora de Guia Parish, the spirit of love and devotion reigns eternal, a testament to the enduring power of faith. It is an Icon woven by time and its history.

On May 18, 2024 marked the successful celebration of the 25th Parochial Fiesta of Nuestra Señora De Guia Parish, Brgy. Dawn, Mati City. Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, DD presided over the Eucharistic Celebration honoring Mother Mary, the Lady of Guidance.

Coincidentally, 25 diocesan and religious priests graced the celebration, religious sisters, PPC and KPK members, and parishioners from various GKKs united in praise and thanksgiving of the silver jubilee.

For a quarter of the century, this sacred sanctuary has been a beacon of faith and unity, bringing together the faithful in joyous celebration. Through the 25 years of challenges and triumphs, the parish has remained a beacon of hope, guiding the faithful with the light of faith and the grace of Mother Mary.
