Diocese of Mati Celebrates Momentous and Joyful Milestone in History

Commemorating its 40th anniversary as a stronghold of faith, the Diocese of Mati gathered as one through a Pontifical Eucharistic Celebration presided by His Grace, Most Reverend Charles J. Brown, D.D., Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, February 16, 2024, at the San Nicholas De Tolentino Cathedral.

Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, DD, Bishop of Mati, warmly and humbly welcomed everyone who joined the mass especially the Papal Nuncio for gracing the solemn celebration of Ruby Anniversary with his presence on behalf of the Pope.

Present in the Eucharistic Celebration are Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, DD, Archbishop of Davao, Most Rev. Guillermo D. Afable, DD, Bishop of Digos, clergy of Mati, priests from other diocese, representatives from different parishes, religious people, seminarians, government officials, and the rest of the laity. With reverence and solemnity, the Papal Nuncio emphasized themes of gratitude and faith.

During his homily, Archbishop Brown stressed the message of the 2nd reading from the letter of St. Paul which has a profound meaning as we look back with gratitude for the gift of faith, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever”.

Moreover, His Excellency remembered the late Bishop Emeritus Patricio H. Alo, DD, the first shepherd in the Diocese of Mati, all missionaries and all the Catholics who played an important role and imparted immense contribution in the history of the Diocese. He even encouraged the people to give thanks for them today, remember the leaders, imitate their faith, and walk their footsteps.

The Papal Nuncio also highlighted the theme of the diocese on this jubilant celebration, especially the word MISSION. He encouraged each one to play their respective roles and go forward together on this synodal journey. As the Pontifical mass concluded, the Papal Nuncio imparted his blessings upon the parishioners, invoking divine grace and guidance for the challenges ahead, and years to come.
