Barangay Elections

Governments of all nations want to know the pulse of their citizens. They make regular surveys to see if the people are satisfied with the way things are. However, the best way to know the feelings of the citizenry is through elections. If many vote and many of the candidates of the ruling party wins, it is a good sign that democracy works and that the people are contended with way the party in power is running the government. Imagine a kettle of water tightly closed. If it is too hot, the kettle will explode. Election is a way of letting off steam or para pahungaw or mahuwasan ang kainit sa politika sa nasud.

Indirectly, the way people vote is a gauge of how they feel about the ruling party. The power to vote is a rare gift given only to citizens qualified to choose our public officials. We will waste this precious gift if we will not vote. More importantly, we will lose this chance to personally choose the people who will run the nation.

Our congressmen, mayor, vice mayor, city councilors may not know us and we may never have a chance to see or talk to them. The barangay captain, the kagawads and youth leaders are part of our own district, our own homeowners’ associations, our sitios, our own street or eskenita. They are our closest link to the government. We personally know most of them. By voting, we show our interest in the government; we share and feel the dreams, needs, hopes of 120 million Filipinos.
