The Irrelevance of Miles
In the remote reaches of the Mandayan Tribe’s ancestral lands, nestled among rolling hills and lush forests happened a vibrant celebration.
The San Antonio De Padua Quasi Parish of Baugo came to hear a divine celebration of the 51st patronal fiesta of its most farthest GKK, the GKK Inahan sa Kanunay’ng Panabang, situated at Sitio Butay, Pichon, Caraga, Davao Oriental, on October 10, 2023. A place where cultural heritage and deep spiritual roots is present. This year, the fiesta celebration had a special significance as it was celebrated by the bishop of the Diocese of Mati, Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, DD.
Upon the arrival of Bishop Abel, accompanied by Rev. Fr. Roberto A. Ombon, San Antonio De Padua Quasi Parish Administrator, Rev. Fr. Ruben Bentayao, Jr., Rev. Fr. Jupiter Morales, and Rev. Anthony Pobar, with the presence of the Mayor of the Municipality of Caraga, Hon. Ronie S. Osnan, together with his staff and the parishioners of San Antonio de Padua Quasi Parish. It took four (4) hours dealing a rigorous way of riding and walking.
It was a backbreaking process yet satisfactory mission. The village square was adorned with colorful banners and streamers, and the aroma of traditional Mandayan dishes filled the air as women and men labored over open fires. The joy and anticipation were palpable as the entire community came together to welcome Bishop Abel. The fiesta’s warm opening welcome ceremony was a sight to behold, with dancers in elaborate traditional attire performing mesmerizing rituals to the beat of tribal drums.
Bishop Abel watched with deep reverence, recognizing the profound spiritual connection. The presence and dedication of Bishop Abel marked a momentous occasion and symbolized a bridge between their ancestral faith and the community. During his visit, the bishop spent time meeting with tribal leaders, discussing their unique spiritual practices, and offering blessings to the community.
Further, the patronal fiesta was formally celebrated with the Holy Eucharist presided by Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Roberto A. Ombon, Rev. Fr. Ruben Bentayao, Jr., Rev. Fr. Jupiter Morales, assisted by Rev. Anthony Pobar. Bishop Abel’s words resonated deeply with the Mandayan tribe, who have always held their traditions close to their hearts.
Bishop Abel’s journey to Sitio Butay patronal fiesta with the support and accompaniment of Fr. Ombon, Fr. Bentayao, Fr. Morales, Rev. Pobar, and Mayor Osnan, together with all the parishioners, was not just a moment in time; it was a celebration of faith, culture, and unity. Bishop Abel’s blessings served as a reminder that despite their remote location, the GKK Inahan sa Kanunay’ng Panabang of Sitio Butay was not forgotten, but their existence is valued.
