Summon to Care for our Common Home

Praise be to You, my Lord! LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore – In this Canticle, St. Francis of Assisi reminds us that Earth is our sister. All of us share life in this beautiful common home. However, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. Countries have already experienced noticeable adverse effects of climate change. These were manifested in the form of temperature rise, variability of precipitation, and changes in the frequency and intensity of typhoons, droughts, and floods, irrevocable melting of glaciers in the Artic, and the massive extinction of species.

Humanity is called for cosmic consciousness and the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption. Francis, invites us to be simple; to gaze at the sun the moon or the smallest of all animals with affection. He communed with all creation and invites us to care for all that exists. By calling ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ no matter how small, Francis recognized and relate with all in the spirit of loving and caring with reverence, Mother Earth and her produce.

If we approach nature and environment as stewards with awe and wonder, praising the Lord for the Earth’s infinite beauty and goodness we would intimately be united with all.

As Earth community, we journey together with a common mission to care for Mother Earth, each according to our own culture, experience, involvements and talents.

LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore!

(Sr. Melanie Galo, SFIC)
