The Precious Blood of Our Lord

When our Lord Jesus Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, he said: “Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is my Blood, the Blood of the New and Everlasting covenant, for the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me.”

Clearly, the Blood of our Lord is the new and everlasting covenant. Therefore, every time we celebrate the Holy Eucharist we are renewed, we become a new creation because we enter into an everlasting covenant. It is everlasting because it is Jesus Himself who we receive – THE LIFE.

More so, the blood of our Lord Jesus brings forgiveness of our sins, which is why it renews us. Through His blood we are once again restored as sons and daughters of God. We are heirs of the kingdom of God.

Moreover, when we talk about the Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus, we are always mindful of Jesus’ sacrifice. According to John A. Hardson, S.J.: “In sacrifice, the gift offered is something precious completely surrendered by the one making the sacrifice as a token of humble recognition of God’s sovereignty.”

Sacrifice comes from the two Latin words: “SACRUM” means “Holy” or Sacred”, and FACERE means “to make” or “do”. Therefore, every time we celebrate the sacrifice of the Eucharist, as we receive the Body and Blood of our Lord, we are made holy. This is a wonder of God. That is why Jesus said: “Do this is in memory/remembrance of me.” He commanded us to always celebrate the Holy Eucharist because He wants us to become holy.

Let us not be afraid to make a sacrifice because by doing so, we are made holy. Sacrifice is the way to holiness. As it is said in Cebuano: “WALAY MA-SANTOS KUNG WALAY PAG-ANTUS.” LET US CELEBRATE THE HOLY EUCHARIST!
