Hugyaw Davao 2023

MONTHS after a thorough preparation, Davao City, which is the center of Metro Davao, the second most populous metropolitan area in the Philippines, known as the “Durian Capital of the Philippines,” officially opened the month-long celebration of the 86th Araw ng Dabaw 2023 on March 1.

The said event was started by a Holy Mass, which was followed by the opening ceremony of Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte at Rizal Park. In his speech, Duterte encouraged everyone to enjoy the events lined up for the celebration but at same time reminded revelers to observe a culture of security. This marks the return of the face-to-face celebration of the city’s founding anniversary, three years after it was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The festival features parades, live music, cultural, sporting, and gourmet events. It is a time for Davao residents to get together and celebrate their city’s history, culture, and achievements. Dabawenyos will also witness the beautiful Reyna Dabawenya coronation night on March 15 at Rizal Memorial College, Petro Gazz Arena, while the Mutya ng Dabaw coronation night takes center stage on March 17 at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) Gym. The two competitions will emphasize the beauty, grace, and intellect of the contestants.

From March 13, municipal employees will have another cause to celebrate as the city government has planned the Employee’s Week Food Festival in Rizal Park. The festival will last several days, giving employees a variety of gastronomic options to enjoy during their lunch breaks or after work hours. The event will conclude on March 18 with the Parada Dabawenyo, which will begin at 6 a.m. on Roxas Ave. and conclude in Rizal Park.

Dabawenyos are reminded also to adhere to the public security and safety protocols to be able to attend the events: no backpack policy, no bringing of umbrella, aqua flask, sharp objects, illegal drugs and deadly weapons, alcoholic beverages. While jackets, ball caps, and sunglasses should be taken off when going through checkpoints and entrances, littering is prohibited, and civilians are not allowed to wear any law enforcement uniform.
