Epiphany: Journeying Towards the True Christian Life
January 08, 2023, Sunday after the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, the Catholic Church celebrates the Epiphany of the Lord. It is when the three magi followed the Star of Bethlehem leading them to the Child Jesus who is Born on the manger.
The Three Magi or Wise Men namely Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar brought gifts to offer to Jesus. These gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. All of these symbolize the roles played by Jesus later on his life. Gold is often related to royalty and divinity. Frankincense, as an offering, when burned is highly fragrant and was therefore used in worship. It is the symbol of holiness and righteousness. Lastly, myrrh was used in ancient times for embalming the bodies of the dead before burial. It was a fitting “gift” for Jesus who was born to lay down his life on the cross.
In celebrating this occasion, it is just fitting for us to learn the meaning behind the word Epiphany. Epiphany comes from the Greek word (epiphanos), which means appearance or manifestation or showing forth. This word is used to describe Jesus’ first appearance to the Gentiles. It can also be referred to God’s Self-revelation as well as to the revelation of Jesus to all mankind as His Son. It is the first time wherein Jesus revealed Himself to the world.
As written in the Gospel there are different reactions shown during the event of the visit of the three magi. One was King Herod showing hatred and jealousy towards the existence of the newborn king, next is the denial of the Pharisees and scribes who knew that Christ is simply the one prophesied by the scriptures and lastly the joyful adoration of the wise men who went to give homage to the Blessed Child.
As Catholics may we also have the same reaction like the Three Magi. Just like them, may we listen and look for the voice and signs of God. The magi followed the star which led them to the most important thing, Jesus himself and they also listened to the voice of God thus avoiding tragedies and dangers. The wise men without knowing what was at the end of their destination remained steadfast in their faith and in spite being noble and wealthy they chose to humble themselves before the newborn king.
We must make sure that just like the magi, we can offer our praises and adoration to God in the Holy Mass. We can also give gifts to the Child Jesus by offering him our gratitude, time, treasure and talent. And if we have the time to do so, we ourselves can also become gifts and blessings to others hence living the true spirit of Christmas.
Lastly, may we also become stars in a way that we may become instruments to lead others to Christ. Through our love, mercy and compassion to our brothers and sisters, we will be able to shine and illuminate other people’s lives. Through these ways we can ensure and guarantee that we are in the right path in the journey towards living a true Christian Life.
Happy Epiphany of the Lord Sunday!
