Radio: Still a Medium Among Davao’s Youth
Eleven (11) out of 15 young leaders in Davao still consider radio as a source of information. In a survey conducted to parish youth leaders by the Research and Database Ministry, results revealed that while others do not anymore listen to it, more than 50% finds it worthwhile to stay in tune particularly on Sundays, at 6:00-9:00 in the evening.
The radio survey reveals that among the favorite stations include 101.1 FM, The Edge, Lite Rock, Home Radio, and Monster Radio. Idol Dagul, Capt. Jake, Paul Wiggy and Inday Tanini, on the other hand, are their favorite DJs.
As to the Program’s Format, most of them prefer News and Music, while a lot of creative juices must come out from the minds of those who produce Radio Drama and Religious or Doctrinal Programs as they least prefer to turn their dial on these radio programs. Ken Wong of St. Joseph Parish says, “People today in this new generation don’t want stagnant or boring program. Pag ablihan atong radio, dapat ma-energize and ma-capture nato ang interests sa mga youth. Dapat naay change of mood, kay basi kapuyan sila maminaw. Dapat lingaw, interesting, funny and touching.”
The respondents, when asked about their preferred title for a youth show, the following lines sparked the attention of many: Youth on Fire, Youth Camp, Kabataan Para sa Bayan, Listen to God’s Heart, Friends of Jeremiah, Really Dios, Youth Christ-tags, and Youth Confessions.
“I can write article about our radio station, says Zial Colimlim of Young Flames for Jesus Community while San Pedro Cathedral’s Ken Briones expresses, “I can be on of the DJs.”
Said survey results have been imbedded in the Updated Feasibility Study as the Davao Verbum Dei Media Foundation, Inc. plans to re-open the Archdiocesan-owned/Catholic Radio Station here in the City. Consultations to lay leaders, clergy and GKK officers are expected to be completed before this May ends.
Statistically, the youth composed almost half of Davao City’s population next to the children.
