Daditama Goes National for Synod Consultations

The CBCP convened in an extraordinary gathering called ‘Synod Philippines’. The path entitled “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission” solemnly opened on the 4th of July 2022 and expected to last until the 7th, held at the Carmelite Missionaries Center of Spirituality in Tagaytay City. It is the long awaited, carefully planned national synodal consultation attended by bishops, priests, and lay representatives from different dioceses across the country.

Day 1 started with an inclusive welcome party where all delegates were called upfront to introduce the Ecclesiastical Province they represent. We hear chants, view AVP’s or witness a production number carefully prepared for said event.

The program was opened by Most Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara of the Diocese of Pasig and currently CBCP Vice President. He emphasized on the art of personal and communal discernment and the two interrelated goals of this process of listening which are ‘TO LISTEN TO GOD so that with Him, we may hear the cry of his people; TO LISTEN TO HIS PEOPLE until we are in harmony with the will to which God calls us.’

Following the Opening Remarks of Bishop Mylo, the president of CBCP, and Bishop of Caloocan, Most Rev. Virgilio David delivered his Reflections about the Theme, “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.”

Bishop David exclaimed that “Synodality is not primarily about walking with God but about God walking with us even when we stray, or even when are caught against a wall.” He likened this path as the call of the prophet John the Baptist which is to PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD.

In the end, Bishop David is hopeful that this synod will allow the church to name the many chasms or gaps that have been keeping it apart from the unequal societies in this modern world and to bridge that gap.
