Davao City has no control on exodus of Davao athletes
The lucrative future awaiting players for collegiate leagues is one of the reasons why athletes from Davao City are transferring to Cebu and Manila to study and become players of big universities.
Davao City Sports Coordinator William Ramirez said Davao City has no control on the exodus or migration of athletes from Davao City to other cities that compete for inter-collegiate leagues like UAAP, NCAA, among others.
“We cannot stop them. We have no control over them,” said Ramirez, adding that Davao City cannot offer the same perks given by big universities to their college players like free board and lodging, allowances and scholarships.
“Our aim for promoting sports in Davao City is human development but if the child wants to venture into professional league, we can do nothing about it,” Ramirez said during the Kapihan sa SM press conference organized by the Davao Press Club, February 17.
Ramirez said the Sports Office will still continue with its existing programs like promoting and funding community sports especially for the young people in the barangay levels.
