Chrism Mass moved

Due to the necessary protocols brought by the pandemic, the Archdiocese of Davao moved the date of Chrism Mass which used to be done in the morning of Holy Thursday.

In his Pastoral Advisory number 10 series of 2021 which was issued last March 25, 2021, Davao Archbishop and CBCP President, Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., announced “that we will not have our Chrism Mass according to the customary time and date during Holy Week. We will let you know the schedule; this will be after Holy Week.”

This followed the guidance from the Vatican in a note that says, “The Chrism Mass can be moved to another more suitable day, if necessary; a significant representation of pastors, ministers and faithful should participate.”

“The Chrism Mass is one of the principal expressions of the fullness of the Bishop’s priesthood and signifies the close unity of the priests with him. During this Mass, which he celebrates with priests of the diocese, the Bishop consecrates the Chrism and blesses the other oils.” (Cf. Ordo)

The other oils refer to the oil of the sick used for the sacrament of anointing of the sick and the oils used for baptism and confirmation. “The newly blessed oils can be brought to individual parishes before the Evening Mass of the Lord’s supper, or at some other suitable time.” (Cf. Ordo) This is in the case of Chrism Mass held during Holy Week.

Meanwhile, the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of the Diocese of Digos took place last March 30, 2021 at 9:00 A.M. which was live streamed via DXGN 89.9 Spirit FM-Davao.

The Dioceses of Mati and Tagum held their Chrism Mass in their Cathedral last April 1 at 8:00 A.M. and 8:30 A.M., respectively.
