Valentine’s Day 2020: From the Lens of a Youth
From its precedence of the so called Lupercalia to Pope Galasius and from the common belief in France and England, that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, till these days, the secular world celebrates Valentine’s Day.But what should be the meaning of Valentine’s Day celebration?
“Valentine’s Day: the holiday that reminds you that if you don’t have a special someone, you’re alone,” said Lewis Black.
This thought has been what the young generation today has in mind. Young people today have this stereotype. They think that if you are single on this particular day, you are better off in your own room, sulking. As a result, instead of it making it as a celebration of love, single young people become bitter.
As one among the youth, young Catholics should change this kind of thinking because love is not exclusive but inclusive. And Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love, not only of a romantic one, but real love. It can be celebrated with family, friends or even colleagues. Why not? Because if we truly love them, we appreciate their presence in our lives and we thank them for being there.
Love is so broad that one should not only focus on couples. Everyone has the right to celebrate it, because after all, we are made by God in love for He himself is love. Everyone, single or couple, should celebrate this day, first with the Lord, by attending the Holy Mass as thanksgiving for the gift of love.
It is written in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Love should not only be celebrated on February 14 but everyday. Saint Clare of Assisi said, “We become what we love and who we love shapes what we become.” Let us choose to continue loving the people around us always. (Gie Rhea Jadulco)
