Flores de Mayo stays
Education Secretary Leonor Briones announced that the Department of Education (DepEd) will not change its school calendar. This means that DepEd students both in public and private schools starts their classes every month of June as what the tradition dictates. DepEd will not follow suit the directive of CHED (Commission on Higher Education) enjoining all State Universities and Colleges to shift their academic calendars to August.
This announcement is a closure to the issue on whether Flores de Mayo is in or out because in the Philippines, Flores de Mayo is one religious activity that is very Catholic, very Filipino, and very popular to the kids.
It may be recalled that when CHED changed its school opening from June to August, some parents feared that DepEd might adopt the school calendar and that Flores de Mayo activities will be greatly affected because there will be no kids participating in the Flores de Mayo because they are still in schooling until the end of May.
The announcement of DepEd Secretary is final. Therefore Flores de Mayo stays forever.
