Earthquakes Can Strike Anytime

DAVAO OCCIDENTAL — A new province is born in Davao. The plebiscite that coincided with last Monday’s barangay elections overwhelmingly supported the carving out of DAVAO OCCIDENTAL from mother DAVAO DEL SUR. To compose the new province of Davao Occidental are the southernmost municipalities of STA MARIA, BASIAWAN, MALITA, DON MARCELINO and SARANGANI.
From the then undivided Davao Province, we now have five (5 ) provinces of Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur and new Davao Occidental.

NAGA CITY — I visited Naga City, Bicol region last week to attend the national convention of the Philippine Jaycee senate. The place is teeming with tourists owing to the marketing efforts of all its sectors. I was able to personally meet CONG. LENI ROBREDO the widow of the late DILG SEC. JESSE who died in a plane crash. Even as a new comer in politics, she defeated the entrenched VILLAFUERTES and is becoming a “breath of fresh air” in the political sector.

NEW BARANGAY OFFICIALS — Another exciting political season is over. A barangay is the most basic and lowest political unit in our governance system. Barangay officials are the front liners and the first responders. At the rate our higher officials are now losing credibility due to fund-related controversies, all is not lost for as long as the barangay officials do their job well.

EARTH’S FAULTS — The Bohol earthquake is an eye opener. It reminds us that the whole country lies in the so-called “ring of fire”. Faults or fissures or big cracks in the earth’s inner crust must inevitably move or re-align from time to time. It can take a million years. Or can take place moments from now. Nobody can predict. This phenomenon is responsible for the presence of precious minerals like gold, copper, etc. in areas that usually are visited by earthquakes or tremors. The minerals are pushed to the surface from beneath when earthquakes take place.
While being situated in this “ring of fire” can bring disasters at a flash, it can also be a boon for the mineralization that is a consequence. So let’s mine those precious minerals so civilization can benefit from them because the “cost” of having them is also tremendous and horrendous.
