From Plastics to a Greener Harmony with Nature

The Diocese of Digos took tiny steps in removing plastics from the environment and hopes to inspire ecological consciousness to the community by introducing a project called Ecobricking.

Ecobricks are made of used plastic bottles packed to a set of density with used, clean and dry plastics inside. It can be packed with other non-biological unrecyclables that are toxic to the environment. Stuff like styrofoams, wires, small batteries, etc. Once collected to a good number, ecobricks can be used to make modular furniture, garden spaces for our community and many other practical applications.

Rev. Anthony Dy of Mary Mediatrix Cathedral in Digos City introduced the concept through an audio visual presentation entitled “Bulong ng Kalikasan”. It shows the rich natural resources of the country from the water resources, land resources and even human resources. It emphasized the beauty of enjoying a community free of radicals. After the AVP presentation, Rev. Tony asked the participants what they can do to help preserve and recreate a community safe from toxic pollution. The exchanges of feeling and ideas led the members to do the initiatives of proper waste disposal, one of which is through ecobricking.

The following hours were spent in creating ecobricks, they were asked to make crafts out of it like flower boxes and modular tiny furniture.

The 17 parishes who responded to this call came home equipped with new skills to introduce to the smaller communities like the GKKs and hopes to present durable outputs that can be useful to any individual, small groups or the whole community in general. (Blaze Q. Cantaros, SJP SocCom)
