In Loving Memory of Most Rev. Alfredo B. Baquial, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Davao

April 14, 1988 – March 1, 1993

Twenty five years ago, Davaoeños were shocked of the untimely demise of Bishop Alfredo B. Baquial, who died of excessive internal bleeding due to complication of diabetes. That was on March 1, 1993 at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan, Metro Manila. He was supposed to turn 52 years old on May of that year.

To reminisce, Bishop Fred, as he was fondly called, was born on May 28, 1941 in Tagbilaran City, Bohol to Eugenio Baquial Sr. and Luisa Banluta. He finished his Philosophy at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary and Theology at San Carlos Major Seminary. He was ordained priest on May 28, 1966 and was consecrated bishop on April 6, 1988 at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral in Tagbilaran City. On April 14 of same year, he was installed as Auxiliary Bishop of Davao and Parish Priest of San Pedro Cathedral Parish.

Prior to his assignment as bishop, he served in the priestly ministry for 22 years in various parishes in the Diocese of Tagbilaran. His last assignment was being the Rector of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Taloto, Tagbilaran City from 1985-1988.

Though short-lived in his ministry as bishop, but he has engraved to the hearts of the Davaoeños his selfless commitment and zeal as shepherd of the flock. His remains was entombed at the Dormitium de San Pedro at the Cathedral basement. (Leenard Baquial)
