Davao Oriental boasts of 6 Nat’l Finalists to the Gawad Saka Search for Agri-Achievers
The province of Davao Oriental boasts of 6 finalists to the Gawad Saka Search for Agri-Achievers, as optimism is very evident that this year, the province will bag even just one national recogniton from the six nominees.
Provincial Agriculture Office’s focal person for the Gawad Saka, Ms. Mercy Quiampo, emphasized that the 6 national finalists’ documents are undergoing validation by the Dept. of Agriculture.
The national finalists are Genevieve Madelo for the Most Outstanding Rice Farmer Category, the Provincial Aquatic and Fisheries Council of Davao Oriental, Municipal Aquatic and Fisheries Council of Banaybanay, Glynneth Laurea of Lupon for the Most Outstanding Fisherfolk-Fish Culture Category, Mr. Modesto Ingig from the City of Mati for Most Outstanding Animal Raiser-Large Animal Category, and the Carmen Barangay Food Terminal of Brgy. Carmen, Municipality of Boston.
The GAWAD SAKA is a project of the national government designed to recognize accomplishments in the agriculture sector, as a way to entice them more to enhance their production and be a part of development. Davao Oriental has been a consistent regional winner in the said competition in the previous years, with then Governor and now First District Rep. Cora Malanyaon’s centerpiece program on agriculture, the “Pagkain at Kita.”
The program is to ensure food security for the families in the province, and as an augmentation to the meager income of the families. Davao Oriental basically is an agricultural province, relying mostly of agricultural products of sources of livelihood. “We are keeping our fingers crossed. Let us hope and pray that we will get another win in the national level,” Quiamco said.
The national awarding for the Gawad Saka is slated on November of this year, and it has been practiced that the President will do the honor of handling the awards.
