City jail opens computer learning center
In its desire to bring Good News of Christ to the inmates and to create opportunities for them to discover His unconditional and healing love and mercy, the Sisters of the Society of Mary or Marist Sisters established a Therapeutic Computer Learning Center inside Davao City Jail. The Computer Learning Center was inaugurated and blessed last Sunday, Sept 11, after the 7 am Holy Mass celebrated by Marist Fathers.
The center, which is exclusively for inmates, has 10 brand new computers provided by the Marist Community. Its vision is to teach the inmates basic to intermediate computer skills.
Sr. Sheila Manalo, SM, the Superior of SM Sisters, said “This is the outcome of God’s generosity and love for the poor. The Society of Mary have seen the importance of this ministry to the inmates. We thank God for the opportunity to serve them.”
The Marist Sisters, through Sister Betchay SM, will administer and supervise the classes. They are also asking for volunteers to help them teach computer skills even for one hour each day. The Sisters hope for the inmates to be given TESDA certificates once they finish the course.
Likewise, 10 computer sets were turned over to JCINSP Don M. Paredes, Warden of Davao City Jail Annex. Present during the ceremonies was the Marist Community led by Rev. Fr. Christopher Ganzon, Spiritual Director of Archdiocesan Commission on Prison Welfare. (Sr. Sheila Manalo SM | Marian Carmela Raquel, ACPW)
