Perks of being a media literate

Hiyee! I am happy Media and Information Literacy has become a part of the K to 12 curriculum. Why? Here is a senior student Ms. Grazielle C. Corpuz who shares her experience being a media consumer.

KNOT_GRAZIELLE CORPUZBorn in the 90s, I saw how technology enveloped people’s lives. I grew on the age of brick games, “Tumbang Preso” and the like; yet the power of technology is way stronger. Brick games became Play Stations and “Tumbang Preso” became a game that I could play on my iPad.

Funny how I witnessed the change. When I was 7, I started using my computer. On the other hand, I saw how my mother struggled in using her new smartphone and my father, his laptop. Yes, it made life easy, but those who use typewriters in creating documents find it hard to cope with the latest trends (Digital Immigrants).

I am happy to be a Digital Native even if I am not an expert and I experienced lots of flaws, yet I am now familiar with this branch of literacy. There are perks of being a media literate like it made me a wise consumer of the media. Second, I gained new friends. Third, it made me more expressive since technology keeps on improving my way of communicating. Lastly, being a media literate benefited me as a young person as my voice can already influence persons of the same age and interest.

Being engaged in the media isn’t bad at all. There may be some negative effects, but there would be more positive outcome when I use them responsibly. – Grazielle
