The Nuestra Señora La Virgen Del Pillar Chapel 1985 – 2024 & Onward
Last October 12, 2024, was the 39th Founding Anniversary of Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Pilar Chapel, Magsaysay Park, Davao City.
A Thanksgiving Mass presided by Most Reverend Romulo G. Valles, D.D., and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Severino Capulong Jr., Our Lady of Fatima Parish Priest, at 7 o’clock in the morning.
This year 2024’s theme is, “Mother Mary’s Spiritual & Medical Community Outreach Mission”. The mass also blessed the youths’ transition into the year 2025’s theme:
“Young Missionary Sailors Of Mother Mary, Carry On – Raise The Sails.” This incoming year 2025’s theme is appropriate as we witness our youths’ voyage into the 40th Ruby Anniversary of this chapel. A gemstone symbolizing love, passion, vitality, strength, success & prosperity. We are entering into an era requiring fresh blood to carry on, to build the bigger pillar of this chapel.
After the mass, a simultaneous community free eye consultation with free eye glasses was rendered to the public.
Chapel History
Due to centuries of countless miraculous healings & protections which molded the faiths of both Christian & Muslim Zamboangueños who have equally received the graces through the intercessions of the city’s patroness saint, the Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Pilar. the migrant Zamboangueño devotees erected this shrine on October 12, 1985 inside of Magsaysay Park, Davao City.
In 2018, the planned total renovation of the entire Magsaysay Park as part of the coastal road infrastructure project has raised a legal problem on chapel’s site which was promptly resolved by the city administration office.
Two days after this year’s 39th Anniversary Holy Mass, a new hope for a more beautiful edifice architectural plan is envisioned.
Soon with God’s blessings. On the east side of the chapel, an altar & canopy monstrance-shaped edifice will rise. Rising above the canopy is a pillar with a replica of the Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza, Spain statue on its pinnacle to greet the sunrise that blesses Davao City everyday.
Henceforth, this park, with the radiance of the spiritual presence of the Holy Eucharist and its edifice’s excellent beauty will become an iconic landmark of Davao City, a pilgrim & tourist spot.
