A Brief History of MaSSSFA and its Apostolic Work

The Mary, Star of the Sea Seafarers’ Family Association (MaSSSFA), under the umbrella of the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS), was born from the need to address the unique concerns of seafarers and their families. Initially, the Samahan ng mga Pamilya ng Manggagawang Pilipino sa Ibang Bansa, a land- and sea-based organization created by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), oversaw the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). However, many in the maritime industry felt neglected due to the distinct contexts between land-based and sea-based workers. This led to the formation of MaSSSFA, a group dedicated specifically to the pastoral and spiritual care of seafarers and their families.

The exact establishment date of AOS Davao is unclear, but it was in the late 1980s when Sis. Virgin Healy, M.M., approached Ms. Engracia “Bing” Micayabas, an employee at Everett Steamship Corporation, to organize MaSSSFA. Initially, the group consisted mainly of Everett Steamship employees and their families, but it eventually grew to include members from other shipping companies.

One of MaSSSFA’s first initiatives was to acquire second-hand appliances and office equipment from Japan to furnish the AOS Davao Center. Regular visits by shipping lines from Japan to Davao every 15 days helped make the center a home for its members and visitors.

In 1996, MaSSSFA played a significant role during the AOS World Congress in Davao, where seafarers’ wives raised funds and provided logistical support for attendees. A notable outcome of this event was the granting of the Stella Maris Center in Davao City.

Over time, leadership of the center shifted. When Fr. Jack Walsh retired and returned to the United States, the Maryknoll Missionaries withdrew their support, leading to the Archdiocese of Davao taking over. Despite a period of neglect, MaSSSFA, with the support of Bro. Jude Coniff, continued its ministry. However, this resurgence was short-lived as Bro. Coniff eventually retired in 2008.

Although the Stella Maris Center was later transferred under the parish’s jurisdiction, limiting the chaplain’s role to sacramental duties, MaSSSFA persisted in its apostolic work. The group continued its regular activities such as monthly meetings, Masses at AMOSUP Hospital, and the annual Fiesta in honor of Mary, Star of the Sea. Additionally, MaSSSFA remained involved in Maritime Week, Migrant Sundays, and other significant celebrations.

MaSSSFA also collaborated with various government agencies and NGOs, including DOLE, OWWA, and MARINA, to support seafarers and their families. The association has maintained close ties with AOS East Southeast Asia Regional Director, Romeo Yuchang, CICM, and is active in providing assistance during calamities, conducting medical missions, and offering legal referrals.

As Davao City experiences economic growth, particularly in the banana industry, MaSSSFA continues to extend its outreach to ports such as Sasa, Tefasco, Sumifru, Uni-Fruitti, and Hijo Plantation.

The association remains resilient, anchored by its unwavering devotion to Mary, Star of the Sea. (MaSSSFA)
