Dedication to the Priesthood
His Excellency Most Rev. Medil S., Aseo, D.D. ordained seven (7) priests in their respective parishes these past days.
Fr. Gepolongca was among those ordained on July 1, 2024 at San Jose Parish, Montevista, Davao de Oro. While Fr. Uriat was ordained on July 2, 2024 at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Quasi Parish, Elizalde, Maco, Davao De Oro.
In his homily, Bishop Aseo addressed Fr. Gepolongca saying that the significance of priesthood is rooted in the love and devotion to the Church, reflected from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians encouraging faithful loyalty to God’s love and service. He explained that priests are entrusted in carrying Christ’s mission of leading others to paradise.
Bishop’s Aseo’s homily addressed to Fr. Uriat emphasized practicing the teachings of the Lord, as the ordination symbolizes their discipleship to Jesus Christ. He described priests as endowed with the likeness of Jesus Christ, having an expansive responsibility such as preaching, healing the sick, and serving the needs of the community.
A recurring theme among Bishop Aseo’s message towards the newly ordained priests is the reflection from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians and its relevance towards the vocation of priesthood. The Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians reminds us of the qualities expected of those who serve in such roles within the Church.
St. Paul encourages believers to imitate Christ’s humility and mindset (Philippians 2:5), which includes prioritizing the needs of others and embodying a servant-hearted approach to the ministry. Such is the role of the priest to carry out Jesus Christ’s mission in guiding His people towards salvation.
Throughout the letter, St. Paul emphasizes the theme of rejoicing in the Lord, regardless of circumstances (Philippians 4:4), highlighting the importance of joy and hope in the ministry. Priests are called to lead the faithful in a life of joy and gratitude, even amidst challenges and trials, pointing them continually to the hope found in Christ.
Priesthood is about offering oneself and being devoted to Jesus Christ, carrying out His mission in spreading love and mercy to all. It means accepting the responsibility entrusted to you and emulating in the likeness of Jesus Christ in all aspects, such as preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, and serving the community. It is a testament of joy, gratitude, and unwavering faith, guiding others towards salvation and offering hope in Christ amidst life’s challenges. (Luke John Sicam – AdDU Intern | Photos by Brenda P.
