Evangelization and Preserving Tradition

The 1st Davao Summit on Church Archives and Heritage Workers Workshop on June 15, 2024 at the Cross Theatre of Holy Cross of Davao College highlighted the role of archives in preserving the rich history and traditions of the Catholic Church. The event gathered 85 church archivists and heritage workers to discuss the pastoral functions of archives and their significance in the life of the Church.

The summit emphasized that archives are a cornerstone of religious heritage, serving as primary sources for documenting the multifaceted expressions of religious life and Christian charity. These archives represent a “Moment of Tradition,” preserving the historical narrative of the Church and its mission.

Key points discussed at the summit included:

  1. Primary Source of History: Archives are invaluable for writing the history of religious life, reflecting the Church’s charitable activities and spiritual journey.
  2. Memory of Evangelization: They document the Church’s evangelistic efforts, showcasing how the clergy, religious, and lay members have contributed to spreading the faith.
  3. Pastoral Instrument: Archives serve as tools for pastoral care, offering insights into the Church’s mission and its impact on the community.

The workshop also highlighted the immense and precious heritage preserved within church archives, as described in a 1997 document on the pastoral function of church archives. These documents encompass the liturgical, sacramental, educational, and charitable activities carried out by the Church throughout the centuries.

Participants engaged in discussions on best practices for maintaining and utilizing archives, ensuring they remain accessible for future generations. The summit underscored the need for ongoing education and collaboration among archivists and heritage workers to sustain the Church’s historical narrative. In the afternoon was a workshop demonstrating the simplest of ways where archivists can take care of old documents. These included how to brush off dust and how to handle and create covers for documents which are older and more delicate.

Through this summit, the Church aims to reinforce the importance of archives in its mission, fostering a deeper understanding of its history and ensuring the continuity of its traditions and evangelistic efforts. The event was a testament to the dedication of those who work tirelessly to preserve the Church’s legacy, ensuring that it continues to inspire and guide the faithful.
