2nd Archdiocesan SoCCom Day: Integrating AI and Wisdom
On June 12, the University of the Immaculate Conception, Bajada Campus, became a hive of activity as 825 participants from 32 parishes and GKK across Davao gathered for the Archdiocesan Social Communications Day. With the theme “Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Wisdom of the Heart: Journeying Together as a Synodal Church Towards One Nation,” the event aimed to explore the intersection of technology and faith in modern social communication.
The day commenced with an insightful talk by Fr. Ulysses S. Cabayao, SJ, who delved into the intricacies of artificial intelligence (AI).
Fr. Cabayao’s presentation highlighted both the potential benefits and ethical concerns surrounding AI usage. He emphasized that AI must always respect human dignity and human rights, and data collection by AI should be minimal and purpose-specific. He also stressed that personal data should be used strictly for its intended purpose.
Fr. Cabayao pointed out the risks associated with increased AI usage, as it becomes more intelligent over time, and underscored the importance of humans controlling technology rather than being controlled by it. He reiterated that AI should be transparent and explainable, aligning with Pope Francis’s call for ensuring that AI is used in a way that upholds human dignity and rights.
Following the enlightening talk, Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D. D., Archbishop of Davao, presided over a mass. This spiritual interlude was followed by a sharing that delved deeper into the topics of AI’s advantages and disadvantages in social communications and its potential to promote inclusivity and diversity.
