6th National Benedictine Oblates Convention to Reignite Unity and Spirituality
After an unexpected delay due to the global pandemic, the 6th National Benedictine Oblates Convention is finally set to happen in Davao on May 2, 2024 drawing participants from all parts of the Philippines, with a notable number arriving from Mindanao. The convention, expertly organized by Sister Nelly Abigail Eliot, is not just an assembly but a spiritual journey aimed at fostering unity and deepening the faith of its attendees.
Originally scheduled for 2023, the convention was postponed as communities worldwide suffered with the effects of COVID-19. This year, however, the event promised to offer more than just a celebration, but also promised a valuable experience designed to strengthen the bonds between participants and reinforce their commitment to the Benedictine way of life.
Sister Eliot said during the interview that the agenda follows the last year’s set of programs which includes workshops, insightful conferences, and fellowship nights that are tailored to not only educate but also inspire the oblates in their daily practices and spiritual duties that will leave with a renewed sense of purpose.
The event will also introduce participants to the rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality of Davao through organized tours. This is one of the highlights as many attendees are visiting Mindanao for the first time. “It’s an opportunity to experience the Benedictine spirit of welcome and generosity,” Sister Eliot explained.
Dealing with a diverse group of participants, the majority of whom are seniors, poses unique challenges in terms of engagement and communication. Sister Eliot emphasizes the necessity of patience and adaptability in her approach. Each individual brings a unique perspective and experience. Understanding and respecting these differences is crucial as it enriches our collective spiritual journey.
Sister Eliot’s hope for the convention is tied with both excitement and a touch of nerves. She encourages participants to fully divert themselves in the experience. ‘Enjoy the moment. Open your hearts, listen to the ears of your hearts according to Saint Benedict, learn from the experiences, I’m hoping and praying that more commitment will come up to this convention and be bonded with other oblates.”
As the convention approaches, the excitement among the Benedictine community is visible. The event not only marks a significant post-pandemic gathering but also symbolizes a recommitment to the values and spiritual practices that define the Benedictine oblates. With over 200 expected attendees, this year’s convention is set to be a significant moment in the lives of many, promising lasting impacts and deeper connections within the Benedictine family.
