Insights from Msgr. Julius Rodulfa to attend Synod in Rome

The Vatican has announced plans for a second synod gathering, responding to feedback from participants of the initial gathering in October 2023. The feedback highlighted the need to develop more ways to involve parish priests in the synodal process.

Scheduled for a five-day meeting, parish priests from various regions will engage in roundtable discussions, liturgies, workshops on pastoral proposals, and dialogue with experts. The delegates will also have the opportunity to meet Pope Francis and engage in dialogue with him on May 2.

The results of the meeting will significantly contribute to the working document drafted for the second session of the synodal assembly, scheduled for October 2024.

In light of this recent announcement, Msgr. Julius Rodulfa, representing the island of Mindanao, reflects on his role in the synodal process. Despite being involved since 2021, he humbly questions what he can contribute. Recognizing the privilege of representing Mindanao, he sees himself as the voice of the faithful in his region. “Because of the mercy of God, we [three] are given the opportunity to participate in the mission of Jesus.”

As the episcopal vicar for the clergy and pastoral director, Rev. Msgr. Rodulfa is deeply involved in preparations for the 75th anniversary celebration of the Archdiocese. His dedication to the church is evident as he prepares to represent the Philippines at the synod.

Prior to the announcement of his participation, Msgr. Rodulfa had already highlighted the lack of clergy participation in the synodal synthesis. His observations and personal insights were also noted by the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), leading to a survey for parish priests and an upcoming online convening in April.

Currently, Msgr. Rodulfa is immersed in preparations for the convention of priests in the Philippines and Asia, where he will bring forth the insights gathered for the synod. Amidst these preparations, he also oversees arrangements for the Archdiocese’s 75th anniversary celebration.

As we anticipate the synod gathering, let us pray for Msgr. Julius Rodulfa and the other representatives from the Philippines and around the world. May they be filled with a spirit of service and readiness to address the needs of the faithful.
