Flores De Mayo and Mary’s Crucial Role

In the beginning, the earth, created by God, was as good as heaven. But it was exploited by sinful human activities, and now cries like a poor person. Mary’s YES to become the Mother of God granted her a crucial role in renewing the earth. In her womb, Mary carried Jesus Christ, Savior of the whole universe, whose mission was to bring renewal to the earth.

The Flores de Mayo, a cherished tradition in the Philippines, recalls the life and virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Just as Mary listened to the cries of the earth and heeded the teaching of her Son, children who join in Flores de Mayo must be led to imitate her example of opening oneself for renewal. By offering flowers and prayers during the Flores de Mayo, children must realize Mary’s role in the redemption of humanity and the restoration of creation. Just as Mary suffered with her Son on the cross, children who join the Flores De Mayo must be introduced to a world in need of healing. Just as Mary is so attentive to her Son who brought glad tidings to the poor, children in Flores De Mayo must learn how to journey with the poor to wipe away their tears.
