Raising Colorectal Cancer Awareness
During March, “Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month,” attention is given to a widespread and preventable disease that affects many worldwide. Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is a dedicated time for advocacy, dedication, and reflection on this prevalent yet preventable illness. As we sail this month, it’s crucial to delve into the significance of raising awareness about colorectal cancer and the steps we can take to reduce its impact.
Colorectal cancer, affecting the colon and rectum, is a prevalent cancer globally, ranking third most common. As per the World Health Organization (2023), it constitutes about 10% of all cancer cases and is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite these concerning statistics, it’s important to note that colorectal cancer is largely preventable through regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices. Early detection, timely treatment, and prevention efforts are vital in combating this cancer.
Special months like Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March focus on educating people about this disease. They highlight the need for regular checkups, signs to look for, and risk factors. By spreading knowledge, communities can help people take control of their health. This involves understanding the importance of early detection and preventive measures.
Besides, there are several causes that make you more likely to get colorectal cancer, like your age, family history, how you live, and certain health problems (City of Hope, n.d.). But making healthy lifestyle choices can greatly lower your risk of getting colorectal cancer, like eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, drinking less alcohol, exercising often, and staying away from tobacco (Cancer Net, 2023). However, according to John Hopkins Medicine (2021), early detection is crucial for colorectal cancer because it allows for more effective treatment. Common screening tests include colonoscopies, fecal occult blood tests, and stool DNA tests. Understandably, screenings may cause some fear or anxiety, but their benefits far outweigh any discomfort or apprehension (Kuipers et al., 2015).
During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, it’s crucial to lend support to those impacted by the disease. Simple gestures like listening attentively, sharing resources, or joining fundraising events foster a supportive network for patients, survivors, and their families. Additionally, advocacy initiatives have the power to influence policy, boost research funding, and enhance prospects for colorectal cancer patients.
This month of Colorectal Cancer Awareness, we pledge to share information, offer support, and urge people to take preventative measures and seek early detection. As a united global force, we can significantly reduce the impact of colorectal cancer and protect lives. Let March be a turning point in our ongoing efforts to raise awareness and assist those impacted by this illness. By working together, we can make a meaningful contribution to the fight against colorectal cancer. (Maria Eliaza Casido | ACD immersionist)
