ADDU Conducts Formation Session In OLAP

The Ateneo de Davao University College Wellness and Testing Center through its community extension program, Multifaceted Advocacies Giving Impact to Society Outreach (MAGISCOR) conducted a Basic Counseling Skills seminar at the Our Lady of Assumption Parish (OLAP) on February 3, 2024.

The event, which was attended by seventy-five parishioners, GKK and organization leaders focused on their roles as leaders whom people may run to for counseling. Though we recognize that they are not trained counselors, it is important to show non-intrusive human connection or compassion when approached.

Topics included attending and listening skills, non-judgmental approach, empathy and the importance of confidentiality, trust and unconditional positive regard. These can also be well practiced in communications in the family setting. During the mini-workshop that capped the activity, our roles as agents of hope through prayer and surrender was given importance.

The program started in 2021 as a support group for widows and widowers in the parish during the global pandemic. It has now evolved into a formation session for parish leaders on mental health. In 2022, a seminar on Stress Management was conducted.

The seminar’s speakers were Ava E. Leuterio, RGC, Nelson C. Magnaye, DMD and Glenn F. Evangelista, RGC. The session was organized by the Parish Catechetical Office led by Matet Dejanio. Special thanks to Fr. Marlon M. Reyes, SSS, OLAP parish priest for giving the blessing and support in this endeavor. (Dr. Nelson C. Magnaye)
