A salute to a legendary sculptor of Davao Archdiocese
He was among the few fabulous artists in Davao. As a sculptor, most of his great works, among others, were Pieta and Mama Mary statues in many parishes, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception statue in Bansalan, Our Lady of Fatima statue on the top of the Fatima Church, Sacred Heart of Jesus statue in Calinan parish, Saint Paul statue at San Pablo parish in Matina, and Saint Francis Xavier statue at the SFX College Seminary in Catalunan Grande.
This famous artist was also the sculptor of the Way of the Cross statues at the Saint Francis Xavier parish in Tibungco, statues at the convents of PM Sisters and Pink Sisters, statues at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Panabo, and the Eagle statue on the top of the Sanggunian Panglungsod ng Dabaw building.
The renown sculptor is Tatay Ruperto Solon born in February 1930, and for many years while he was still living, he used to serve in the church as a very humble Gift Bearer servant of San Pedro Cathedral; and he died with humble heart last January 8 this year.
He was among the three wise men of DaDiTaMA who humbly died with legacy early this year along with Bishop Ronald ‘Bong’ Lunas of Pagadian Diocese who died last January 2, and Archbishop-Emeritus Fernando ‘Nanding’ Capalla of Davao Archdiocese who died last January 6.
Bishop Ronald, Archbishop Fernando and Tatay Ruperto returned to the hands of their Creator with Christian pride and dignity at the end of Christmas season in January at the beginning of new year 2024.
Tatay Ruperto is the father of the Program Head of DXGN Spirit FM of Davao archdiocese, Annie Solon Libres.
Rest in peace our dear sculptor. (Vonz M. Hijada, MAT, OLLP SoCCom)
