Identifiying Our Why’s

As the liturgical year is about to end, we look back to the year that was and we prepare ourselves for the year that is to be. The Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications organized an event that was spiritually enriching and insightful. It was the advent recollection. The presence of well-versed speakers from Manila, the venue at Ateneo de Davao University, and the diverse activities throughout the day all contributed to a meaningful experience for the participants last November 19, 2023.

The opening Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Karel San Juan, the University President of Ateneo de Davao University, set a reverent tone for the day. Ms. Annie Libres, the Program Head, extended a warm welcome to the group further highlighting the importance of the gathering.

The dyad session, where participants were prompted to reflect on how they can influence others to prepare for the coming of Christ and how to use media to share the good news in their daily lives, likely provided a platform for thoughtful discussions and insights. Sharing these reflections within the group would have fostered a sense of community and collective purpose.

The shared lunch would have been a time for fellowship and bonding among the members of the Archdiocesan Social Communication, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

The second part of the recollection, featuring Fr. Francis Lucas, Executive Director of CMN and Sir Edwin Lopez, EWTN International Manager have delved into the practical aspects of communication and media use in spreading the message of Christ. Fr. Lucas’s tips on communication and Broadcast Media, especially highlighting the accessibility and boundary-less nature of radio, and the most accessible form of media for reaching a wide audience. Sir Edwin Lopez’s emphasis on having a listening ear and the importance of sharing by starting statements with “I remember” before explaining the reasons behind ministry choices with a twist question why am I doing this? (the strength of my why) adds a personal touch and depth to the communication process.

It was indeed a well-rounded and spiritually fulfilling event, providing valuable insights and guidance for the members of the Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communication in their mission to share the good news of Christ. (Jeralyn Palero – Parish SoCCom)
