Children’s Mass in honor of St. Therese of the Child Jesus in Carmelite Monastery 2023

“From Childlike Faith to Doctor of Divine Wisdom: St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus”

In a world often preoccupied with the pursuit of grand ambitions and monumental achievements, the path to sainthood and the revered title of “Doctor of the Church” can seem distant and unattainable. However, there exists a profound and transformative path known as ‘THE LITTLE WAY,’ inspired by the remarkable life and spirituality of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. This path, seemingly simple and humble, invites us, ordinary individuals, to reach extraordinary heights of sanctity and potentially be recognized as doctors of divine wisdom.

On a picturesque afternoon on September 30, 2023, the Carmelite Monastery in Lanang, Davao City, bore witness to a heartwarming and inspiring gathering. People from the local community and beyond gathered to celebrate the Feast of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus. What set this celebration apart was its unique format—a Children’s Mass. This choice underscored the enduring appeal of St. Thérèse’s message, particularly to the youngest members of the faith community.

During the Eucharistic celebration, the Anawim Children’s choir sang melodiously. Young children, adorned as little Therese and little John of the Cross or as little Carmelite Friars, wore their religious habits with reverence and innocence. Their presence created a charming and memorable atmosphere, allowing young ones to connect with their faith in an approachable and delightful manner. The attendance of Carmelite Nuns, Active Sisters, OCDS (Secular Carmelites), and Carmelite Novices collectively embodied the essence of Carmelite spirituality, infusing every prayerful moment with a profound sense of purpose.

With Fr. Richard T. Escoto, OCD, serving as the Priest Presider, we were reminded of the parallels between our own lives and that of St. Thérèse, affectionately known as the “Little Flower.” Like her, each of us possesses a unique mission and purpose in the metaphorical garden of God. Fr. Escoto encouraged us to believe that, just as a small flower is real in the natural world, Jesus is very real and present in our lives. Through acts of goodness, the development, and sharing of talents, we can bloom where we are planted, mirroring the example set by St. Thérèse.

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, from her humble beginnings as the “Little Flower” to her eventual recognition as a Doctor of the Church, leaves us with a timeless and practical message—a CALLING TO LOVE. Her message resonates deeply, inviting us to nurture our own childlike faith and ultimately become doctors of divine wisdom in our own unique ways.

In her journey, we discover that the path to holiness lies not in grand ambitions, but in the sincere and simple pursuit of LOVE, HUMILITY, AND DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE—a path that leads us to a banquet of eternal life. This profound message echoes the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew 22:37-39, where He emphasizes the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” St. Thérèse’s life serves as a beautiful embodiment of these commandments, reminding us that love, humility, and devotion to the divine are the keys to drawing nearer to God and experiencing the fullness of life in His presence.
