A Gentle Reminder for Fathers
Let us acknowledge the gift of fatherhood on June 18, 2023 as we celebrate Father’s Day. Being a father is a privilege and entails a lot of responsibilities. May we remind fathers to be gentle while being the source of strength in our family. Fathers may have different parenting styles but it is hoped that they will value their children’s thought, feelings and perspectives for them to grow up well.
Parenting styles nowadays is very different to the parenting style most of us grew up with. Before, we have the traditional way where it focuses on reward and punishment. Today, we have many parenting styles and one of them is the so called patient, calm, and punishment-free, gentle parenting that is an evidence-based approach that focuses on empathy, respect, understanding, and boundaries according to Kimberly Zapata that was posted at parents.com. Its goal is to raise confident, independent and happy children. The latter is quite ideal or you may also combine both traditional and gentle parenting styles. Nonetheless, whatever parenting style you may practice depends really on what works best for your family.
With all the anxieties and the chaos our children are experiencing these days, may fathers be more encouraging where children can be more open and be heard. Children today need fathers who can teach them how to live in this uncertain world. Hopefully, as fathers empathize with their children it is hoped that they may also share the word of God with them. Fathers being the leaders in our homes, are hoped to also guide the family spiritually. By doing so, the family will become closer to God and with each other.
As for me, I’m lucky to have experienced the love of a gentle father. My late father though had some imperfections was a loving and compassionate one. I’m truly grateful for his thoughtfulness. I’ve learned so much from him. He also taught me to love music and movies.
This father’s day, let us not forget to acknowledge our Abba, God the Father in heaven who is always there for us, who is ever merciful and faithful though at times we are doubtful of his grace. Thank you Lord for your generosity and for all the blessings. Happy Father’s Day!
In closing, I am sharing with you below my short prayer for all fathers :
Lord, thank you for the gift of fatherhood. Please bless all the fathers in the world. May you give them wisdom and understanding as they take care for their children and family. May they be healthy in mind, body and soul. Please give them a caring and gentle attitude as they practice authority over their family. This we pray in Jesus name. Amen.
