The Many Roles of Mary

Clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”(Rev12:1) This is one of the most popular images of Mary. It expresses that Mary, as the queen of the whole universe, is praised by all creatures for her fairness.

Mary as the Girl, Ever Virgin: As a young girl, Mary carried not only the Lord of Heaven and Earth, but also the whole universe in her womb while remained her virginity for her whole life. Her virginity is the sacred sign of what nature is supposed to be as God’s creature, remain untouched and as the source of all life.

Mary as the Mother, Garden of God’s Creature: As the month of the savior of the universe, Mary participated in God’s plan of salvation by caring for the whole of nature. “Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus, now cares with maternal affection and pain for this wounded world.” (Laudato Si’ 241)

Mary as the Queen of all Creation: As the Queen of all creation, Mary “in her glorified body, together with the Risen Christ, part of creation has reached the fullness of its beauty.” (Laudato Si’ 241) Mary contemplates upon God’s every creature and understands its value and meaning for greater glory of God.

Mary has restored God’s creation to as what it is. “Hence, we can ask her to enable us to look at this world with eyes of wisdom.” (Laudato Si’ 241)
