St James the Apostle Parish, Bunawan Open Recollection and Confession 2023

Our Lenten Preparation

“The act of repentance during the season of Lent invites all of us to change our minds, hearts, and to have faith in the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Rev. Fr. Ramon C. Jamora Jr., Parochial Vicar, The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of Calinan

The St. James The Apostle Parish of Bunawan recently held an Open Recollection and Confession last March 28, 2023, Tuesday which was led by Rev. Fr. Ramon C. Jamora Jr., Parochial Vicar of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of Calinan. The event was hosted by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Rolando O. Mandreza.

The recollection started with a prayer, followed by the welcome remarks of Fr. Mandreza. The recollection centered on the theme of repentance, which is the invitation during the season of Lent. Fr. Jamora tackled the five Sundays of Lent and the messages behind them.

The first Sunday of Lent, which talked about Jesus being tempted in the desert, emphasizes the nature of humans and that we are always tempted. But through faith and the word of God, we can resist temptation and remain strong in our faith.

On the second Sunday of Lent, we are invited to remain children of light and listen to Jesus, who is the beloved son of God. We are reminded to be more like Jesus and ask ourselves, “What would Jesus do?” in our daily lives.

The third Sunday of Lent highlights the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. We are called to accept our faults and repent, just as Jesus accepted the Samaritan woman despite her past sins. We are reminded to forgive and accept others, just as Jesus forgave and accepted us.

The fourth Sunday of Lent focused on the story of the man born blind, whom Jesus cured. It emphasized the power of faith in Jesus to bring about healing and salvation.

The fifth Sunday of Lent recounts the raising of Lazarus, which shows the fullness of Jesus’ humanity and divinity. It also highlights the deep compassion of Jesus for Mary and Martha in their grief, which moved Him to tears.

Therefore, the Lenten season is a time of introspection and renewal. It is an opportunity for us to examine our thoughts, actions, and attitudes toward ourselves, others, and God. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we are called to deepen our faith and grow closer to our Lord.

There was a confession after the recollection. There were eight priests who were present to hear confessions and provide spiritual guidance to those who seek repentance and forgiveness.

In conclusion, Fr. Mandreza’s closing remarks served as a reminder on how to prepare for the Holy Week. He had hoped that people spent time in prayer and reflection and meditated on the suffering and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, and renewed commitment to follow His teachings. In this time of uncertainty, it is essential to find moments of reflection and repentance. Indeed, the Open Recollection and Confession in Parish served as a guide to help focus on the message of Lent prepare ourselves for another journey this Easter. (Joylyn B. Jalos)
