Dangpanan Responders Undergo Training
Mental health has become an increasing concern among the youth in the Archdiocese of Davao, as well as in many parts of Davao Provinces and neighboring cities, and even in other countries. The prevalence of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicide has been steadily rising. Several factors contribute to the mental health challenges faced by young people, including academic pressure, social media, family issues, emotional maturity and financial struggles.
One particular issue in the Archdiocese of Davao is the stigma surrounding many young people who become reluctant to seek help for fear of being judged or misunderstood. This can lead to a lack of access to mental health services and resources, as well as feelings of isolation and hopelessness.
To address this issue, the Archdiocese of Davao, through the Family and Life Apostolate created DANGPANAN and conducted a facilitators’ seminar for first responders on mental health last April 15, 2023, at the Beaterio RVM Retreat House, Juna Subdivision, Matina, Davao City. Family and Life Apostolate Director Rev. Fr. Orlando Angelia facilitated the seminar with his desk members, and vicariate representatives as well as three mental health awareness experts: Dr. Jerson John Trocio, Sr. Ma. Leah M. Zozobrado, RVM, and Mrs. Jovy Ungab-Gatan, RGC. The aim was to raise awareness about mental health issues and how to respond to people who might have these issues as well as to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help to lessen suicide cases and promote the importance of early intervention and seeking help when needed.
DANGPANAN is a new advocacy of the Archdiocese of Davao that addresses current issues and concerns in society, particularly on mental health. Through DANGPANAN, families in the Archdiocese of Davao will now have the opportunity to seek refuge from their anxieties and concerns.
Lastly, to improve the mental well-being of people, the DANGPANAN facilitators have made a concerted effort to address the issue. They aim to increase awareness about mental health, reduce the stigma associated with seeking help, provide accessible and affordable mental health services, and promote healthy coping mechanisms and self-care practices. It is crucial for individuals, families, schools, and communities to work together to prioritize mental health and provide support for those who are struggling. By taking steps to address mental health challenges, we can create a healthier and more resilient community that supports the well-being of all its members. (Bro. Julius Lugay)
