Fire prevention is a better option
Davao City celebrates Fire Prevention Month beginning March 1, 2023, coinciding with the formal start of the 86th Araw ng Dabaw. This year’s theme is “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi Ka Nag-iisa,” which underlines the necessity of team effort in avoiding fires and safeguarding the safety of personnel and the community they serve. The month of March is designated as Fire Prevention Month by Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A, to raise awareness and promote fire safety across the country.
According to PAGASA, March is one of the hottest months in the Philippines, with maximum temperatures and humidity levels across the archipelago. It is the start of the summer season in the Philippines. According to Bureau of Fire Protection data, it is also the month that has one of the most alarming fire incidents in the country (BFP).
In saying so, the BFP gives us some of the important tips in order to prevent the fire. Here are the following:
- Check electrical connections. Replace damaged sockets or extension cords.
- Check your wiring, avoid “octopus” connection or overloading at all times.
- Unplug items when not in use.
- Keep an eye on your cooking. Never leave an open stove unattended.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Be ready with fire extinguishers in your home.
- Store flammable items out of reach of children, away from dried items such as shrubs, dried leaves, paper.
- Clear out dried items like wood, leaves from surroundings; even on roof.
- Have safety escape plans and practice them with your family at least twice a year.
These are just some of the things we should do to keep ourselves and our families safe from possible harm. Let’s protect ourselves and our neighbors. Through this, our lives will be orderly, peaceful, and safe from disaster.
As stewards, we should always know that God has entrusted this to us, so we must use prudence and judgment in protecting what He has given us. When it comes to the safety of people and buildings, whether you are a priest, member of the church, or lay person, it’s wise to follow the recommendations of professionals, particularly when they are in authority to protect people and property.
