Mother of Mercy Mother of Mercy

Mother Mary intercedes on our behalf

“A coronation ceremony was held for Mary on July 2, 1927, and the painting was crowned ‘Mother of Mercy’. It is a picture of Mary without the child Jesus. The picture shows several sides of Mary. To remind us that she is a virgin, a humble servant of the Lord, merciful mother, and patron of the people, she rests her head gently to the right side of her body and keeps her eyes half closed while her hands are crossed in devotion. At the same time, sun rays encircle her head, and she is dressed in beautiful gold and silver garments and adorned with crowns. They are emblems of her heavenly and royal status as the Queen of Heaven.” (cf. Mother of Mercy, Booklet)

From her heavenly throne, the Blessed Virgin Mary makes gracious intercession for her earthly children. Seeking God’s “mercy” is more than just asking for forgiveness; it’s seeking God’s abundant blessings for body, soul, and spirit, and we ask Mother Mary to intercede for us.

Mary is the spiritual mother of all Christians because she is an example of mercy, compassion, tenderness, and love. At the cross, Mary saw the wounds of her son and heard his words of forgiveness and mercy, witnessing firsthand how the promise of divine mercy was made real in the atoning death of her son. Due to her total submission to God, Mary has shown the depth and span of God’s love, which causes her heart to expand to include every person in the world. By this means, we can all consider Mary our “Mother of Mercy” because she is the one who intercedes for us to God and secures His mercy on our behalf.

The church rejoices to receive God’s mercy via her son and to praise God’s mercy along with Mary. Mary is the image of the church, and the church rejoices to receive God’s kindness through her son. It is our prayer that, as we turn our thoughts to Mary, our Mother of Mercy, we may be able to extend mercy to others and find forgiveness from God.
