First Catechist of Mama Mary
As we celebrate the Catechetical Month let us be reminded that Saint Anne was the first catechist of Mama Mary. Catechist is defined as a teacher who prepares students for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Baptism. Their primary role as a teacher is to instruct students about the gospel values like honesty, humility, patience, perseverance, and the like.
Saint Anne did to Mama Mary what ordinary catechists would do to their students. She instilled to the Young Mary the values of humility and obedience. That is why it was easy for Mama Mary to say “Yes” and accept the role of becoming the Mother of God.
Saint Anne, unknowingly, has prepared Mama Mary to the life of Perpetual Help through her instructions and obedience to God. It is always expected of catechists to live a simpler life and become witnesses of God’s values. That is what Saint Anne is to Mama Mary two thousand years ago. She did not only instruct and instill good values but she lived the life worthy of emulation by the Young Mary.
