“In old age they will still bear fruit”
In keeping with Pope Francis’ message for the Second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, allow us to feature a remarkable lady who recently turned 102 early this year. Emma G. Corro, a mother of 9, was born and raised in Dumaguete City. Among many of her accomplishments, she was crowned as Miss Negros Oriental in 1936, graduated as a Medical Technician, went through the times of World War 2 and the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. She married the love of her life, Dr. Augusto Corro, and grew a large family living in Misamis Occidental. There she became a Science teacher, and because she was a skilled pianist she taught the choir in St. Vincent High School – where a number of her students to this day hold such dear affection for her. She is a woman who has a love for learning and many describe her as having a sharp mind and a very good memory. Due to the pandemic in 2020, her Centennial celebration was reduced to an online event having her whole family on a Zoom call. It was nevertheless a happy celebration, and she is no coward to technology. Having been blessed in her old age, some people like taking pictures with her, most recently during her vaccination in 2021. Even in her old age she bears fruit as she serves as an inspiration to her already well accomplished children – encouraging her grandchildren and great grandchildren to do their best in life. She is the woman the family gravitates towards and the foremost reason why everyone can come together. That alone is a great blessing. (KC Corro)
