Consultation on the Role of Media to Promote Child Protection

A presentation of children’s electoral agenda was held during a consultation on March 29, Tuesday at the Big House Hotel in Juna Subdivision. The creation of this agenda was participated by children in different barangays since October last year. This consultation was made possible by the ACT for Children Alliance consisting of several NGOs advocating for children’s rights.

The objective of the consultation were first to raise awareness on media practitioners on the issues affecting children in the city and the former’s role in reporting incidents of abuse and exploitation; second is to present the views and opinions of children and their electoral agenda.

Among 15 invitations sent to different media companies, only 3 participated. However, the representatives from these companies were positive that this was only the beginning of a partnership in the promotion of children’s welfare.

Jeanet Laurel Ampong, Executive Director of TALIKALA Inc., started with the presentation of the current issues affecting children not only during the pandemic but also in media reporting ever since. It was also mentioned that children are having difficulties with regard to online and modular classes as some of them do not have guardians who are capable of guiding or teaching them.

During the pandemic, LGUs prioritized the distribution of relief and implementation of health and safety protocols, having neglected the need to provide help desks for abuse cases. There was very limited access to assistance to children who were abused at home. Also, concerns related to the protection of children’s identity in reporting were also raised and the media people were reminded not to compromise the children’s rights.

It has been a practice to consult children right before elections to be able to listen and cater to their needs and present them to candidates. The role of the media is to create a link of connection between these candidates and the NGO’s that represent the children so their goal to be heard will be achieved. Also, giving space to children’s issues and concerns to platforms such as radio programs or features on television or print will allow people to be informed of the needs of the children. (DCH)
