Why we should pray for our priests
Because they are in danger: 1. From the world. The priest has to live in a world with his mind always on God. He must work in a world where pleasure is found in food and sensual excitement, yet he is expected to find happiness in company with Christ. To live and survive this difficult life, he must have much grace; grace obtained through prayer. 2. From the flesh. The priest is called to a superhuman life yet he remains a human being. To resist the baser, strong forces of human nations and live an angelic life, he must be filled with the grace of the Lord which can be obtained only by prayer. 3. From the devil who hates Christ. Satan continuously tries to destroy Christ and the Church. If Satan makes even one priest fail, it means fewer Holy Masses and many souls are lost. The devil lays his most cunning traps for priests and prayers alone can keep them safe.
What do we get out of this? When we pray for priests, we pray for ourselves because holy priesthood means holy people. We win the favor of Christ because we are supporting his work and for vocations to the priesthood. We are helping our children and their future generations by taking the surest way of preserving the faith for them.
One should never attack a priest even when he is in error and falls; rather one should pray and do penance that God will grant him grace again. (Mutter Vogel’s worldwide love, St. Grignion Printing House, Altoting South Germany page 29, 1929 edition experts).
