Religious Review for Elders
I am now 81 years old. Because of the COVID-19 lockdown, protocols and alerts, I have more time to read and think. Instead of going around and window shopping, I believe we seniors should spend time recalling our catechism classes.
- What is the bible? It is a collection of sacred books, written by men chosen by God, guided by the Holy Spirit and accepted by the Church as inspired. It is the most read book in the world and has been a world best seller ever since because it is the only “divine book”, the word of God in the language of man. “Bible” comes from the Greek word “biblia” meaning books. By the 13th century, the books became the book, stressing the unity of all the books of the bible.
- What are the 2 main parts of the bible? The Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament is a record of the old agreement between God (Yahweh) and his chosen people, The Jews or Hebrews. It describes the remote preparation for the coming of the Messiah. The New Testament is a record of the new agreement made by God with the whole human race through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God made man. Christ and his apostles usually referred to the Old Testament books (There were no New Testament book yet) as scriptures, the sacred scriptures, the Holy Scriptures and the words of God. Christ also called the old testaments “xx the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms. ( 1 Luke 24:44)
- How many books are in the bible? 73 books; 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. Using a system of abbreviations, O.T. means Old Testament and N.T means New Testament. In citations, the first number after the name of book means the chapter, the number after the colon means the verse. Example NM 23:19 means the citation is from the book of Numbers chapter 23 verse 19.
