Advent: Expecting to be Expectant
This is a play on two English words. It is a simple mental exercise but they can bring us to a deeper knowledge – perhaps? – of the mystery of what is termed “Mystery of Incarnation”. This refers to the moment when God took human flesh!
Simply speaking, then, the Church, that is, all of us, during this period of time we call Advent, will be reminded of the truths of Faith about the Invisible God taking human flesh in Jesus Christ. This reminder will make us know and maybe experience the “birth of God” according to Fray Meister Eckhart, O.P. — .
This “birth of God” which to Fray Eckhart refers to “purity of heart” is “good and pleasant news”, defined as Expectant, by the Oxford English Dictionary.
So, the simple play on two words seems, at least linguistically, or mystically (?) justified.
Advent, then, is a holy season when we are EXPECTING TO BE EXPECTANT!
