Dreaming Together, A New Culture In Fratelli Tutti?

Last week’s Shalom article was titled, Human Fraternity An Experience Of Daylight. In the present Shalom I am sharing my delight in the dynamic of dreaming in daylight! It is a common, day-to-day experience of many people, common in all human cultures.

What Is this a new culture in Fratelli Tutti?

It is the culture of dreaming together which Pope Francis reveals as a “splendid secret” arising from the “universal aspiration for fraternity…” (8).

This is wonderful and remarkable! It is a deep insight into the cultural dynamics of human togetherness. His belief that this would happen are visible in the words, “universal aspiration to fraternity”, “rebirth”, “community” which describes the internal process of culturization as a “splendid secret”. He is citing the source of the idea without mentioning its name. There are commentators who identify this source which I cannot now recall.

But does this serious “daylight dreaming”, a cultural dynamic that happens in an automatic way? No. There is a way, a path. He calls it dialogue.

Both in the Abu Dhabi Document, Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, and in Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis made a strong appeal ten times repeating the phrase, “In the name of God”… “for peace, justice and fraternity” ending with, “In the name of God and of everything stated thus far, (we) declare the adoption of a culture of dialogue as the path, mutual cooperation as the code of conduct, reciprocal understanding as method and standard.”
