St. Francis, Patron Saint of Ecologists
Today, October 4, is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron of ecologists. During his time, he lived in poverty and trusting in God’s providence. He cared for animals and plants and became an instrument for dialogue and reconciliation. Inspired by his example, Cardinal Mario Bergoglio took his name as Pope Francis.
On this day, our parishes are exhorted to hold blessings of animals, pets, seeds and plants to enhance our awareness to care for creation. Thanks to our Archdiocesan Social Action Center for spearheading this celebration. Each one of us are called to become good stewards of creation as God’s gift for us to live and survive in this beautiful world God has created.
As we emulate the example of St. Francis in caring for creation, let us remember a Chinese proverb: “We have not inherited the earth; we have just borrowed it from our children.”
